Antique Posts

The topics that I will discuss here are topics that I have already been discussing elsewhere. These are articles that I've been asked about weeks later or that have been covered elsewhere.

iOS 7 is for 13-Year-Old Girls Because It's Not Only for Men?
(Groupthink, 9/20/2013) A men's rights activist got into the iOS 7 beta and decided that the redesigned interface was "feminine," and thus no longer for manly men like himself. His arguments were laughable but Business Insider (in the middle of the controversy with their CTO Pax Sheppard) felt it necessary to accept some of the premises as true and run with the idea that perhaps the feminine redesign was a good business move because well over half of iPhone sales are to women. The premise that had to be accepted for this argument to hold true? That light blue is a girl color.

Charm is for Suckers: The Practical Princess, 2013
(Groupthink 9/07/2013) A rewriting of the 70s fairy tale The Practical Princess, the story of a princess who keeps finding herself in need of saving and does it herself, with references to recent problematic men.

This Is Why There Aren't Enough Women In Tech
(by Nitasha Tiku, Valleywag, 8/29/2013) My comment from a previous article on sexism in tech quoted by author of followup to the article.

Solidarity is for NinjaCate, Not Miley Cyrus
(Groupthink, 8/27/2013) A summary of the Solidarity is for White Women and Jezebel's refusal to accept responsibility for the bad behavior of its editorial staff regarding a former writer and his attacks against black feminists. When Miley Cyrus's WMA performance was deemed appalling by black feminists, Jezebel once again skipped over the racial issues and wrote about how Miley Cyrus shouldn't be slut shamed. Groupthink user NinjaCate (aka BattyMamzelle) wrote a summary of black feminist reaction to the piece, explaining the racial issues. The intended audience was already familiar with Solidarity is for White Women and how this coverage played into Jezebel's stance of supporting white women even at the cost of supporting black women, so her article didn't cover the background that the audience knew. The article went viral. As a member of the intended audience, I felt that the backstory that we knew was important to understanding the issue in full, but NinjaCate was overwhelmed by the response and couldn't address the issue herself. I decided to pick up some of that work and explain the backstory that was necessary for full understanding of the issue.

Fight the Extroversion Binary!
(Groupthink, 8/23/2013) A response to the series of introversion listicles that tried to make introversion sympathetic, but crossed over into the Forer Effect instead, convincing the entirety of Facebook that they are introverts.

Things I Dislike About Guys Who Write Posts Like This
(Groupthink, 7/25/2013) Some guy wrote a terrible, sexist listicle about the things that "men hate about women" when "men" is defined as "him," women are stupid if they (correctly) contradict him, and apparently, we are all "attention hordes."

Kotaku comment about gender bias in games actually being an issue of gender bias in the workplace
(Groupthink, 7/12/2013) This comment covers some of the reasoning behind the Petticoat Despot project and has been reblogged by several feminists, on account of ragemaking.

If you are looking for an older post of mine and remember the topic, ask in a comment or send me a message and I will track it down for you/add it to the list.
